US-Iran Ceasefire Deal in Limbo as Strikes Test Fragile Truce

(MENAFN) According to reports, US and Iranian negotiators are moving closer to a potential agreement to extend their fragile ceasefire by 60 days, but the deal remains dependent on approval from US President Donald Trump.

US sources told AFP that both sides have been working on a memorandum of understanding that would extend the truce and open negotiations on Iran’s nuclear programme, though tensions continue to rise amid mutual accusations of violations.

The proposed framework, as reported by Axios, includes provisions to ensure unrestricted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, the removal of naval mines by Iran within 30 days, and a lifting of the US naval blockade if commercial traffic resumes.

However, Iranian media and officials have pushed back against claims that an agreement is close. According to reports, Iran’s Tasnim news agency said the draft has not been finalized and stressed that any deal would only be valid once officially announced by Tehran.

Iranian sources also indicated that third parties such as Pakistan would be informed if an agreement is reached, underscoring continued procedural disagreements.

On the ground, tensions remain high. According to reports, Iranian forces fired at multiple ships attempting to transit the Strait of Hormuz without authorization, while state media claimed the waterway has remained under restriction since the war began.

US forces, meanwhile, said they intercepted several attack drones in and around the Strait and prevented another launch near Bandar Abbas.

Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei described US actions as violations of the ceasefire, while a US official told AFP the strikes were “measured” and aimed at preserving the truce.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps warned of a “firm response” to any renewed attacks, reflecting the continued volatility surrounding the negotiations.

According to reports, the situation in Tehran remains tense, with civilians expressing concern that the ceasefire could collapse at any moment as diplomatic talks remain uncertain and conditional on high-level political approval.
